A Safe Haven Training Academy

A Safe Haven Training Academy serves homeless and disadvantaged job seekers, including ex-offenders, military Veterans, female heads of household, youth and young adults. Job training programs are designed to target strategic skills gaps to ensure trainees are put on a career pathway.

 

Training Programs

Introduction to Welding – A 14-week, 210-hour program. This is a beginning welding course that teaches basic welding skills that lead to an American Welding Society certificate – Gas Metal Arc Welding (GNAW or MIG). The program is designed to provide students with training in basic welding skills. In addition to learning welding mathematics, blueprint reading, layout and fabrication, students are introduced to the basic fundamentals of job safety and ethics. Graduates are qualified to a standard of the American Welding Society: AWS GMAW D1.3. Graduates also complete the OSHA 10 HR (General Industry) safety course and test to receive OSHA 10 certification. Classes run on an open enrollment schedule. Upon graduation, students receive assistance with job placement in the manufacturing and metal fabricating industry.

Includes: Resume Writing Assistance, Job Placement Assistance, Job Club, Financial Literacy, Basic Computer Training and Adult Basic and Secondary Education

Great for: Individuals seeking an entry into the industrial or construction welding field

Tuition: There is no cost to the job seeker for these programs.

 

Welding Bridge Program– A Safe Haven’s (ASH) Welding Bridge program is patterned after the research-based Integrated Education and Training (IET) model. As defined in WIOA Section 203(11), we will “provide Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) activities concurrently and contextually with workforce preparation activities and workforce training in [Welding] for educational and career advancement.” ASHs primary objective is to address the education and workforce training needs of low-skilled adults (with at least a 6-grade reading level) in the Chicagoland area. We endeavor to increase the economic power of Chicagoland families by helping participants earn an industry-recognized certification in Welding.

ASHs Welding Bridge is a 24-week, 576-hour program. In addition to introductory Welding, this course provides low-literacy individuals with the educational support needed to achieve basic qualifications for a career in Welding. Besides learning welding mathematics and vocabulary, blueprint reading, layout, and fabrication, students are introduced to the fundamentals of job safety and ethics. Graduates are qualified to a standard of the American Welding Society: AWS GMAW D1.3. Graduates also complete the OSHA 10 HR (General Industry) safety course. Great for: Low literacy individuals and those without a high school diploma or equivalency seeking entry into the industrial or construction welding field.

Tuition: There is no cost to the job seeker for these programs.

 

Culinary Arts Program – A nine-week program, with four course sessions a year. The Culinary Arts Curriculum is designed to provide students with the basic skills and knowledge they need to success as a culinarian. The program combines the classical elements of an apprenticeship-based education with a contemporary classroom-style education, selecting the best elements each style of education has to offer. The curriculum focuses on learning basic Front-of-House/Back-of-House kitchen fundamentals and techniques, including stock, soup, and sauce preparation, knife skills, weights and measurements, cooking methods, seasoning and flavoring including vegetable, fruit, meats and fish fabrication and complete Food Service Sanitation Manager’s Certificate examination. Upon graduation, students receive assistance with job placement in culinary, hospitality and catering businesses.
