FoR FAMILIES
Are you a family with children in need of shelter?
Please go to the Salvation Army Shield of Hope Center at 924 N. Christiana.
If transportation is a barrier, visit any hospital emergency department or police station, or call 3-1-1 to request a ride to shelter.
You may also complete a Coordinated Entry System (CES)) assessment to determine eligibility for long-term housing support by going to an In-Person Access Point or calling the Phone Access Point at 312.971.4178. Please note that this may or may not lead to a housing option and does not solve your immediate housing crisis. People cal also call 211 to receive information about the Access Point closest to them.

If you are a veteran and are experiencing or are at risk of homelessness, please contact your local Veterans Affairs (USDVA) Medical Center, or the USDVA Chicago Community Resource and Referral Center (CRRC) at 312-569-5750, for an assessment, a referral and immediate shelter.
Veterans referred to A Safe Haven Foundation Veteran Transitional Housing through the CRRC or VA Medical Center can obtain a bed the day they are referred.
If you are a young adult (ages 18–24) experiencing homelessness, A Safe Haven Foundation’s Youth Overnight Shelter is here to help.
We provide a safe, welcoming environment for up to 25 individuals each night, open daily from 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM on a first-come, first-served basis. No appointment is necessary.
While staying with us, you will have access to:

⚠️ When temperatures fall below 0°F, we expand our capacity to serve up to 40 youth and remain open continuously until conditions are safe for guests to leave.
Call the Homelessness Prevention Call Center
Dial 3-1-1 or 312-744-5000 and ask for “Short-Term Help.” (TTY Access is available for callers using specialized TTY equipment due to hearing problems: 312.948.6817.) Call Center staff will assess your eligibility for financial assistance and other community resources, then refer you to partner agencies that can help. The Call Center is open Monday – Thursday from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. If you reside in Suburban Cook County, call 1.877.426.6515 for help with basic needs.
If you are a family and are seeking shelter:
Please go to the Salvation Army Shield of Hope Center located at 924 N. Christiana, for shelter placement. If you are unable to make it to this location, please go to any hospital emergency department or police station, call 3-1-1, and ask for transportation to a shelter.
You can complete a Coordinated Entry System assessment that asks you questions about your eligibility for housing programs that will meet your needs. Upon completion, your name will be entered onto a list, and you will be notified if you’re matched to a housing program. Please visit the nearest Access Point to complete an assessment.
These centers are open from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday – Friday. City residents who need assistance can drop in or schedule an appointment to have an initial assessment to identify their needs for a range of resources, including shelter, food, clothing, domestic violence assistance, job training/placement, and services for the formerly incarcerated. Clients can also get information about rental, utility, and other financial assistance programs. The facilities serve as Warming and Cooling Centers during periods of extreme weather.

If you are a youth (between 18 – 24) experiencing homelessness, the A Safe Haven Foundation Overnight Youth Shelter can help. We accept up to 25 individuals, opening at 7:00 PM every evening, on a first-come, first-served basis, and closing at 7:00 AM. You can receive case management, charge devices, and two hot meals.
Walk-ins are welcome. Approach the front of the building, ring the bell and say you are looking for shelter.
On evenings when the temperature drops below 0° F, the shelter will house up to 40 youths indefinitely, until the temperature rises for the youth to leave safely.
