History
“The staff and the residents, everyone welcomed me like a long lost brother. I never felt
like I belonged like I do here at A Safe Haven.”
- A.L., resident, South Shore
In 2009, A Safe Haven Foundation acquired the 100-year-old Chicago Christian Industrial League to create a wider footprint and stronger voice to serve homeless individuals in crisis and transition. Having established a reputation of working in partnership with both government and private agencies to provide success oriented solutions to homeless people, who often struggle with alcohol and substance issues, A Safe Haven Foundation was invited by CCIL’s Board of Director’s to carry out its mission.
CCIL was founded in 1909 making it one of the oldest social service agencies in Chicago serving homeless men, women, and children. Its original mission fits seamlessly with ASHF as it too began as a not-for-profit social service agency called to serve homeless men, women and children of all races and religions on behalf of the community of metropolitan Chicago. Now, as partners, ASHF continues the good work of CCIL.
A Safe Haven Foundation
Established in 1994, A Safe Haven LLC began to coordinate supportive housing, treatment, affordable housing, job training, and job placement services. Today, A Safe Haven Foundation's housing and case management services are available to people who are homeless, have been addicted to drugs or alcohol, struggle with mental health issues or have been incarcerated. ASHF boasts one of the highest rates, 70%, of sustained sobriety by clients, triple the national average for drug treatment programs nationwide. Notably, nearly 100% of residents are reunited with their children. Since its inception, the Foundation has served over 30,000 clients, and provides recovery services to over 1200 individuals daily. ASHF is the recipient of the 2009 “Social Sustainability Award” given by the National Green Museum, the 2009 Silver Trumpet "Issues Management" award given by the Publicity Club of Chicago, and the 2008 Good Neighbor Award given by the Chicago Association of Realtors.
